The Beach at Public Access 36

Twenty-seven miles of sugar-white sand

Panama City Beach stretches along roughly 27 miles of Gulf of Mexico shoreline, and nearly all of it is the same startling white. The sand here is almost pure quartz, washed down from the Appalachian Mountains over thousands of years and bleached and polished by the surf. It stays remarkably cool underfoot even in July, and it squeaks when you walk on it — a signature of fine quartz crystal beaches.

Why the water looks lit from below

The famous emerald color is real, not a postcard trick. The clear Gulf water sits over that bright quartz-sand bottom, which reflects sunlight back up through the shallows — on calm summer days the result is a glowing green you can see from blocks away. Water temperatures typically reach the low 80s °F from late May through September, and the beach has a gradual, family-friendly slope into the surf.

Using Public Access 36

Panama City Beach maintains dozens of numbered public beach access points along Front Beach Road and Thomas Drive, each with a marked walkover to protect the dunes. Public Access 36 is the one closest to Palmeras Marinas — about half a mile from the front door, an easy 10–15 minute walk with beach gear in hand (basic gear, beach towels, and a few toys are in the townhome's garage). Remember Leave No Trace: anything left on the beach overnight is collected, and filling in holes at the end of the day protects nesting sea turtles.

Good to know

Double red flags mean the Gulf is closed to swimmers — flag warnings are posted at public accesses and enforced. Glass is prohibited on the beach. From May through October, sea turtles nest along this stretch, so beachfront lights go off or turn red-tinted after dark. Sunrise and sunset walks are the local favorite hours: soft light, cooler sand, and dolphins often visible beyond the sandbar.
